Discovering Easter through play and faith
Helping children connect with Easter through fun, meaningful and age-appropriate experiences.
Harmony Week is a meaningful opportunity to help children grow respectfully by nurturing empathy, celebrating diversity and fostering a strong sense of belonging in everyday moments.
We live in one of the most culturally diverse nations on earth. Harmony Week (16-22 March) provides a joyful opportunity to nurture in our children a deep respect and genuine curiosity for the rich tapestry of people who shape our community.
Everyday across our 135 services, children, families and educators come together to bring to life their different experiences, backgrounds, traditions and stories, providing an enriched learning environment where every child feels a genuine sense of belonging.
This focus is reflected in our pillars — how we support your children to grow individually, creatively, socially, confidently, spiritually and respectfully. It is particularly reflected in our commitment to helping children grow respectfully.
Catholic Early EdCare Head of Operations Susan Chimonides said the early years are a foundational time for children to learn that difference is something to treasure.
“Our ‘respectfully’ pillar is about showing respect for children and teaching them respect for themselves and the people around them,” said Susan.
“We encourage children to stand in other people’s shoes. We do this in a number of ways throughout the day. It might be circle time discussions about feelings and how our actions affect others, setting up play spaces that challenge stereotypes or celebrating cultural events. We love nothing more than inviting families into our services to share stories and teach us about their culture and traditions.”
In this way, children begin to understand who they are and how they relate to others in the world. When children feel seen and valued for who they are, they develop confidence, empathy and a sense of compassion.”
Susan said that families play an important role in supporting children to understand and celebrate difference at home. Here are some everyday moments you can use to help your child learn to appreciate both their own identity and the diversity around them.
Five ways to help your child grow respectfully
Share your family story
Talk with your child about your family’s culture, traditions and experiences. Looking at photos, sharing memories or preparing a favourite meal helps children build a strong sense of identity,
Explore new experiences together
Read stories, listen to music or try foods from different cultures. These shared experiences build curiosity and openness, helping children learn to respectfully value others.
Talk about similarities and differences
Support your child to notice both what makes people unique and what we all share. Simple conversations can help children understand that difference is a natural and positive part of life.
Encourage inclusive play
Provide opportunities for your child to play and connect with others from different backgrounds and abilities. Inclusive play builds empathy, friendships and a sense of belonging.
Model respect in everyday moments
Children learn through what they see and hear. By modelling kindness, inclusive language and curiosity about others, you are helping your child develop values aligned with respectfully valuing each person.
At Catholic Early EdCare, we believe every child deserves to feel known, valued and supported. By working in partnership with families, we can continue to watch them grow into compassionate, confident individuals who understand the importance of respect, connection and belonging.
